Instant Gratification

Today I'd like to touch on the topic of instant gratification in gold making.  Recently I've been getting a lot of questions asking what people should do in certain scenarios and 99.9% of the time I recommend adding 77 twink gear and daily transmog searches to their profession arsenal, and most people don't want to take the time to repost the stuff when the auctions expire.

Fun Facts
Yes, transmog gear and twink gear don't sell as quickly as raw materials you can farm, or cut gems for example, BUT they sell at a way higher profit margin when they do sell, and they take very little time invested if you use TSM.  Instead of spending hours maximizing your JC profit by doing the shuffle, you can do a quick scan of the AH, maybe spend 15 minutes accruing new supplies, and be on your merry way.

The one thing you have to know about this Cataclysm Twink gear is that although you may sell 1-2 items in patches, but when there's a new 77 who is fully aware of it, he's gonna splurge on all that you have:

This sales picture is from one day, the red buyer is all the same guy, a 77 priest who wants to get the best gear that gold can buy.  I made 4,000g from this one character alone, and spent at most 2,000g on the gear originally.  Did I have to repost it a couple times?  Sure.  Is it going to sell in the long run?  Yes.  I always buy at (at most) half what I'm going to sell it for.  Even if someone is already in your market, and you can only pick up a few pieces, you will benefit from the other pieces on the AH.  People don't want one piece of this gear, it will make very little difference.  They want full sets, or as much as they can get, and your piece is (hopefully) included in that.

How I suggest doing it
If you have the space, make a level one toon dedicated solely to posting these types of auctions.  Get him/her some nice bags, preferably with 100 or more total slots (two full mail empties).  Post all of your auctions on 48 hour windows, and have another toon do the buying and send all the items to this toon.  Log your posting toon religiously every 2 days to repost your auctions.

You don't have to spend much time at all on this toon, just the reposting time, and it REALLY doesn't take that long if you know how to setup TSM.  This also avoids you being hated on your server for selling transmog gear at such high prices.  Doing a once daily search and once every other day posting with this stuff will get you a ton of gold.  I've been doing it this way on my own server and on the Alliance side I've made over 50k gold, and horde side I've made over 150k gold from this method alone .  I know it seems like a lot of work and that it wont pay off in the long run, but once you have a decent supply going (150+ items) you will be making sales every time you post, and it will become well worth it.

  1. Reminds me of a speech I watched about Microwave Americans. That is - everything has to happen fast.

Things have to be that "I do X, and achieve Y for it", it's seen as failure if you put in the work for X, but don't immediately achieve the intended goal. There is no race - if you didn't finish first you failed.

In relation to auctioning, if the items aren't giving that immediate satisfaction of getting the sale then people can't see past that and lose interest - It's hard for them to see the EVENTUAL payout of reposting all the items.

    1. Of course, but for some reason people equate low turnover rate with low profit, which just isn't the case.

  2. TSM is such a beast, I could never manage to figure it out. And since there's so many things you can do with it, the guides that are out there are also really confusing. Do you know of any guides/videos that explain how to do what you're saying, regarding reposting?

    1. Faid from Clockwork Riot has some TSM video guides which are great, they can be found here. Setting up TSM does take a bit of time and getting used to, but once you have it going, it greatly streamlines your gold making, so you spend less time at the AH and more time playing the game!

  3. TSM indeed is a beast, but the few features you will need to start off with is easily learned through either Faids vids or a simple youtube search "TSM guide".

I made a Horde (minority on my server) just do see what i could do with only money from starting zone and the 77 cata twink gear is by far my best moneymaker... from 7g31s17c i have so far made the first 30k in solid gold and every other day i repost auctions worth more than 100k :) (TSM tells me that amount of total auctions combined).

I am well pleased with this market on all servers im milking these days... transmog however is moving very slowly these days :( so for the easy cash - go for iLvl 272 gear...

BTW i never buy anything above 150g and i repost armor for 350g and weapons/shields for 500g... and everything sells, but "of the boar" and "of the whale" :D

  4. You inspired me to bump up my prices a little i went from average of around 260 to 300,I made a few less sales but overall made bigger profits this week, thanks!

    1. I suppose it could strongly vary by server, it's all about finding where that supply and demand curve intersect for maximum profit!

Phat's Ultimate WoW Gold Making Macro Guide

This guide is going to be extensive so buckle up. Macros are a great way to make your gold making more efficient, and this is going to be a guide to both create your own basic macros, followed by a compendium of macros that I use myself for gold making.

Creating a Basic Button Clicking Macro
Playing WoW, particularly using TSM, one clicks a lot of buttons to be as productive as we are. I'm not going to cover every button, but I'm going to go over how to find and macro any clickable button. The first thing we're going to utilize is WoW's built in Frame Stack. This tells us all the frames our cursor is currently hovered over, and we can find Button names from the list to make macros for them. Here's an example.

Type /fstack and you will get a window that looks like this:

Right now I'm hovered over the TSMAuctioningPostButton, which I've just learned the name of! If I wanted to create a macro to click this button, I would just have to add a /click before the b…

TradeSkillMaster Sniper Tutorial

If you haven't already, there are only 2 Days Leftto participate in my Yearly Review Survey to provide feedback that will go towards improving the blog in 2014!

Yesterday, the TSM team released a slew of updates for TradeSkillMaster, and among them was a new feature for the TradeSkillMaster_Shopping Module called Sniper. What the addon does is searches for recently posted items that meet a set of rules that you set up, and allow you to snag them before anyone else does. Before I release my video publicly, I'm posting the link on my blog for my readers as a sort of early release! Enjoy!
